CNN —When Volkswagen decided to relaunch the Scout SUV brand it took a very unusual step. The revived and revamped Scout Motors will introduce its new brand of all-electric off-road-capable SUVs, kind of like Rivian. Buzz, an electric update of the classic hippie bus, VW is touching on nostalgia to reach a new generation of car buyers. VW came to own the trademark for the defunct brand in 2021 when it purchased Navistar, a successor company to International Harvester. Scout’s parent company, Volkswagen, is building its own EV battery plant in Canada and a battery engineering lab in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

There are more than four million electric vehicles on American roads, but fewer than 1,000 of them are heavy-duty trucks. On Tuesday, the three largest truck makers plan to announce a push to remedy that deficit by calling on governments and utilities to help them build many more places to charge big rigs. Daimler Truck, which owns Freightliner; Navistar, which is controlled by Volkswagen; and Volvo Trucks have formed an association to push for chargers, improvements to the electricity grid and other measures they say are needed to promote battery- or hydrogen-powered trucks. The new organization, Powering America’s Commercial Transportation, will be based in Washington and also be open to suppliers, nonprofit organizations and other groups. The Inflation Reduction Act, which Democrats passed in 2022, provides $1 billion for electric trucks, including tax credits of up to $40,000 for companies that buy them, as well as subsidies for charging infrastructure.

REUTERS/Alexandria Sage/File PhotoWASHINGTON, July 6 (Reuters) - California state air regulators and truck and engine manufacturers said on Thursday they had reached an agreement on state emissions rules that will give companies more flexibility to meet requirements. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) said the "Clean Truck Partnership" with the Truck and Engine Manufacturers Association (EMA) includes new flexibility for manufacturers to meet emissions requirements while reaching state goals for reducing emissions. Newsom said "today truck manufacturers join our urgent efforts to slash air pollution, showing the rest of the country that we can both cut dangerous pollution and build the economy of the future." California said Thursday it agreed to modify elements of the 2024 NOx emission regulations for which manufacturers will provide offsets to maintain California emission targets.

US-made MaxxPro vehicles "are almost indestructible," a Ukrainian fighter told The Times. While some were killed as they attempted to flee, others escaped in a MaxxPro armored fighting vehicle, despite being under heavy fire. Last year, the US announced that it would send 200 vehicles to Ukraine as part of a military aid package. But it is facing formidable obstacles, including Russia's complex defense systems in southeastern Ukraine, comprised of razor wire, anti-tank obstacles, and deadly minefields, Insider recently reported. Ukrainian forces have fired the Remote Anti-Armor Mine System, a US-made artillery round that lays anti-tank mines in flight, Insider recently reported.

The project could also receive up to $180 million in job development tax credits based on hiring, said South Carolina Commerce Secretary Harry Lightsey. In May, VW said it would reintroduce the Scout off-road brand in the United States, offering new electric pickup and sport-utility vehicles. Scout said it hopes to eventually create 4,000 jobs and produce 200,000 Scout vehicles annually. Volkswagen has moved away from cars in the United States. Monday's event was the latest major auto announcement for South Carolina, home to BMW's (BMWG.DE) U.S. operations and its largest plant by volume.
"The amount of energy BEVs need is so enormous that I see a strain on our grid that ultimately it can't fulfill." Daimler Truck will invest up to 15 billion euros ($16 billion) on fuel cells over the next decade, Daum said. Symbio, which supplies fuel cells for Stellantis vans, expects global fuel cell vehicle sales to reach 2 million units annually by 2030 and wants a 10% share. Both General Motors (GM) (GM.N) and Toyota (7203.T) are testing fuel cells for larger vehicles including semi-trucks and trains to build scale and lower costs. While Volkswagen is not currently investing in fuel cells, it has hundreds of patents around the technology.
TuSimple to lay off 25% of workforce

Dec 21 (Reuters) - TuSimple Holdings Inc (TSP.O) said on Wednesday it will lay off 25% of its workforce, or nearly 350 employees, as the self-driving truck company seeks to chart a course out of the economic upheaval that has been raging throughout the year. The company said it expects to record a one-time charge of nearly $10 million to $11 million, most of which would be recorded in the fourth quarter. The downsizing also follows the dramatic removal of chief executive Xiaodi Hou in October after an investigation by the company's board revealed that some employees spent paid hours last year working for Hydron Inc, a startup working on autonomous trucks mostly in China. Earlier this month, TuSimple also ended a deal with Navistar to co-develop trucks with autonomous driving capability. TuSimple, Navistar scrap deal to develop self-driving trucks
  + stars: | 2022-12-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
Dec 5 (Reuters) - TuSimple Holdings Inc (TSP.O) and Navistar have ended a deal to co-develop self-driving trucks, the companies announced on Monday. In 2020, Illinois-based Navistar bought a minority stake in TuSimple and announced a deal to co-develop heavy-duty self-driving trucks by 2024, as the autonomous driving technology space boomed with investor attention. The trucks would have operated at Level 4 autonomy - where vehicles can operate without a driver under set conditions. TuSimple also received nearly 7,000 orders for the self-driving trucks from companies including DHL Supply Chain, Schneider (SNDR.N) and U.S. Xpress (USX.N). San Diego, California-based TuSimple, which in October said it plans to focus on initial commercialization of its trucks in 2023, did not specify reasons for ending the deal.
Musk had promised, for instance, that Tesla's mass-market electric sedan Model 3 would be priced at $35,000, a claim that bombed. But in October Musk said Tesla vehicles were not ready to take humans out of the loop. "Tesla team just completed a 500 mile drive with a Tesla Semi weighing in at 81,000 lbs!" For Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who has expressed skepticism about all-electric trucks, Musk said: "(Gates) can drive it himself if he wants!". "I want to take diesel trucks off the road," he said, adding that federal incentives for trucks that run on hydrogen could be more substantial than those battery electric trucks.
KABUL, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Taliban military aircraft roared over the Afghan capital on Wednesday as the group's defence ministry tested out recently repaired hardware, much of it left behind by foreign militaries and acquired since the Taliban seized power a year ago. Aircraft, including helicopters and at least one plane, flew low over Kabul skies near the airport, including what appeared to be at least one Russian-made MI-24 attack helicopter and two other American-made aircraft. A defence ministry spokesperson, Enayatullah Khowarazmi, told Reuters the Taliban had recently repaired some helicopters and were conducting the flyovers as a test. The defence ministry also said in a statement that its engineering team had recently repaired 35 tanks, 15 Humvee armoured vehicles and 20 U.S.-produced Navistar 7000 military vehicles. Some of the aircraft were flown into neighbouring Central Asian countries by fleeing Afghan forces a year ago, but the Taliban inherited left-over aircraft.
One solution to the problem is autonomous trucks, and several companies are in a race to be the first to launch one. The journey was completed in 14 hours versus the usual 24 with a human driver, mostly because a truck doesn't need to sleep. Its plans are dependent on state legislation, however, because currently some states do not allow for testing of autonomous trucks on public roads. According to Lu, that's still cheaper than paying for a human driver. But you're saving the cost of a human driver, which based on average US wages is about $80,000 to $120,000 per year -- or 80 cents to $1.20 per mile.
